Noticed that How-To Geek is one of the new moderators helping make the pool of not a real question sadness that is SuperUser not so disgusting.

And noted too that the footer of the S(O|F|U) includes the link to How-To Geek.

Does this mean that the Enthusiast badge on SuperUser, which still mentions ServerFault, might be sponsored by How-To Geek?

Note the new look of the footer now

Better attempt to right a proper placing than having Meta banished to the end as it was previously. (Tried to click on the icons, nothing!)

Now over at HowToGeek

They finally linked back!

Cocaine and hookers ain't cheap, you know (at least not the good stuff). Maybe those ads just weren't pulling their weight. – Eric Jul 30 '09 at 11:12

Can we change the title to 'What is How-To Geek' and 'why is it on the footer'? Anyone asking a duplicate question likely will not find this question since it doesn't reference how-to geek in the title. – George Stocker Jul 30 '09 at 12:59

Great. A freakin' blogroll. :-) – Nosredna Jul 30 '09 at 15:36
@Gortok, I managed to not see this question because I asked about "howtogeek.com" which is what I saw in the links. – Nosredna Jul 30 '09 at 15:37
Oh, there's a footer? – Daniel Daranas Aug 7 '09 at 9:00

I'm colorblind, so the Meta box just looks like an inordinate amount of space before the link. sigh – Eric Aug 11 '09 at 6:13

While I'm enthusiastic about this partnership (though I'm not sure what it will be, apart from The How-To Geek becoming a moderator on SU), I don't think that howtogeek.com should be placed in the footer inline with the rest of the trilogy & Meta, since it's not a sister site.

Perhaps another line could be added - something like "league of justice" that has woot.com and howtogeek.com?

better footer 2 - now with more better!

+1 Nice idea. That way we can still distinguish. I often use the bottom links to jump between sites. – Diago Jul 30 '09 at 16:15

Definitely need to move that howtogeek.com link off the same line, just keep hitting it instead of meta or superuser. Doesn't engender good will. – random Aug 1 '09 at 6:18

Already upvoted, but am in favour of that league of justice line, unless there's an issue about vertical screen real estate. – random Aug 11 '09 at 6:23
Looks like they've already incorporated one thing I changed in my screenshot - the vertical bars | are gone between the sites – Kyle Cronin Aug 11 '09 at 7:11

Definitely did not see the blog fresh with that before bugging meta. – random Jul 30 '09 at 12:22

While the original idea of having The How-To Geek as a moderator on SU was (and still is) a really good one, the truth of the matter is he's been almost completely inactive for quite some time. Looking at his profile, it shows that his last comment was in December, his last answer in November, but he had stopped being active long before that, ever since the beginning of October (4 months ago).

This poses a real problem. It meant SU was in reality one moderator short (this has been fixed through the appointment of Troggy and Ivo) during all that time. Also, the link on the footer of the page should not really be there, at least not inline with the rest of the trilogy sites. There's no real, practical reason for its existence there, sadly. I don't think it helps either the Trilogy or his site since there's no cross-promotion between the sites other than those static links.

+1 I never really understood the relationship between SU an HTG. Haven't seen any good come out of it. – fretje Feb 5 '10 at 16:39

It was well known that there was only one active moderator (Diago) on SU for a while. (TXI being busy, and splattne mostly on SF). So it was more than "one moderator short". Besides, for the rest, the How-to geek is a good reference, and should be used more often on SU, for some FAQs. (As FAQ, as opposed to the "specific question/answer" model of the sites). But true that it's strange to have it next to the other sites, as it is finally something completely different in the way it works. – Gnoupi Feb 5 '10 at 16:40

In my opinion, the How-to geek user should have a particular role. Not especially as a moderator, but as a reference. Whoever is behind the account should probably know what was described on the HTG site, and should be able to add links to it as comments, or eventually answers. That way, it would have a point. – Gnoupi Feb 5 '10 at 16:45

Does this mean I'm no longer to link to HowTo Geek articles as an answer, because it would violate his "copyright"?

You quote "copyright" like it's not a real thing. – random Jul 30 '09 at 11:52

Linking to an article doesn't violate copyright, and is pretty much encouraged by any website owner anywhere. – The How-To Geek Jul 30 '09 at 19:26
