When disputed flags were first implemented, it simply said something like "disputed" in the flagging summary (the flagging history page accessible via one's profile page), both when I disputed someone else's flag, and when someone else disputed my flag.

Today, I disputed someone else's flag, and it looks like this in my flagging summary:

enter image description here

AFAICT, that "moderator" was me. There's no other disputed flag for that particular topic, and invalid flag is the description assigned to the "disputing flag".

It doesn't make sense to display the description like this to me. In improving the description of disputed flags they apparently were broken for half the users, since the same description appears both for the "disputing" and the "disputed" user. And that's the bug. Either make the description neutral again, as it was before, or distinguish between disputing and disputed user's flag in the flagging summary.

The moderator in this case was me, agreeing with your assessment of the flag you were disputing and marking it as declined. That's probably the cause of the difference, as most of the time disputed flags are likely just cleared off as helpful (as helpful/declined on a disputed flag makes no real difference), which would not result in any message being attached. Still, you are right, the way the mod's response to a declined disputed flag is shown to disputers isn't correct. – DMA57361 Jan 23 at 8:23
@DMA57361 "but found no evidence to support it" sounds a lot like the text displayed to the user who created the original flag. So while you might be the third person involved, and the message refer to your decision, it doesn't change the bug. – Daniel Beck Jan 23 at 8:51
The text of that message is indeed aimed at the original flagger and is incorrectly shown to disputers, I didn't try to dispute that. I was just trying to add some additional context to this specific situation to ensure everyone understands why the majority of disputed flags don't look like this example to the disputers. – DMA57361 Jan 23 at 9:15
@DMA57361 So most disputed flags only show up as "disputed" (to both users), since no moderator reacted? – Daniel Beck Jan 23 at 9:17
no, moderators did react (otherwise the flags would still be unhandled), but just dismissed them as 'helpful' (which doesn't infer a message) without taking any further action, because once a flag's been disputed whether the result is finally helpful or declined had no real effect (status will always be disputed, flag weight never changed). Removing as helpful is faster, and with flag weight regularly being called up the declining of flags was much less frequent than it should have been (imo anyway). – DMA57361 Jan 23 at 9:29
