Whenever a retag request comes about - or when I'm wading through /review I often come across old questions which haven't been answered, with low views & most of the times the questions are by anon users who've most probably done a hit-and-run.

Should these old questions be left as it is? Closed? Deleted?

You need to consider several things - which you've already mentioned:

  • Can it be edited into something more useful?
  • Does it have low views?
  • Does the user still exist?

If, as you say, the question has low views and no votes and the user is either unregistered or doesn't exist any more then I think closing as too localised is the right thing to do. If it's got a zero score, down-voting to make it -1 will make it a candidate for the auto-delete bot.

Some questions are perfectly valid once they've been edited to make more sense. If the question is a good question, it's not a bad thing to leave it open until it get answered because someone else might come by looking for the same question or answer. If the user was a temp or there are low views/no votes, this may have been caused by several things. Maybe nobody had the expertise at that time. If we edit these questions and make them pop up as active again, they may get an answer and that answer may be useful down the line. If they become active again and again receive no attention, then maybe it's time to archive them. I think one of the goals is to have as much information related to our Q&A site on the site, so resurrecting old-unanswered questions is a good way to test the waters to see if the expertise has shown up, or if new users are having the same issue.
