In the Super User Tour it says

Accepting doesn't mean it's the best answer, it just means that it worked for the person who asked.

On the other hand, this help answer states that

You can also accept your own answer, but you must wait 48 hours to do so. After all, someone else may come along with an even better solution to your problem!

Isn't that contradictory? If accepting doesn't mean to mark the best answer, why do you need to wait until you accept your own answer because someone might come up with "an even better solution"?

You need to wait because someone might come up with a solution that works even better for you.

  • This is true. But also for non-self-answered questions. I myself have answered a few questions that are quite old, but with either a new answer or something that more clearly defines what is happening. For example, I found this thread on Stack Overflow that helped me get MySQL upgraded in MAMP in macOS. But I also found—what I consider—a cleaner and more accurate answer that explains why certain things needed to be done. I posted that 2 years after the initial question and it was well received.
