Problem:

We have these two tags:

"restarting" could mean anything, e.g. services, applications, daemons, and computers. "rebooting" only affects computers (the tag wiki also mentions that).

Two ideas:

  • Should we retag those from "restart" that actually mean "rebooting"?
  • Should we merge them into one big "restart" tag?

These 75 "restart" questions are actually about "rebooting":

I don't think we should merge those, reboot is more specific than restart and I feel we should keep it that way. I wonder how many questions are tagged restart instead of reboot by accident... Commented Mar 10, 2012 at 16:56
  • Needless to say that given these statistics one big "restarting" tag would make sense. Or not?

As you've pointed out, "restart" by itself can refer to a lot of different things. As the tag doesn't refer to any particular topic, it doesn't convey much useful information. I'd definitely say this tag should be deleted. The tag refers to a specific process--restarting a computer or operating system--and should not be deleted.

We want every tag to convey useful information, representative of the nature of the question. A tag that doesn't refer to any specific topic is as good as nothing.
