I want to comment on a question and provide some feedback but I can’t.

How can I build up privilege quickly so I can comment?

You acquire privileges by building up your reputation. These concepts are discussed in the Help Center: What is reputation? How do I earn (and lose) it? and List of privileges you can earn. The short version is: there are basically three ways to get reputation:

  • Find questions that you can answer, and answer them.
  • Ask new, intelligent, well-researched questions. This is sometimes harder than writing answers.
  • Find posts (questions and answers) with severe problems (typically in formatting or English) and edit them.

I still find really strange that (apparently) newbies are allowed to edit others users posts but not allowed to add comments (to ask for more detailed explanation on a solution for instance)

  • Because of new users can suggest an edit to a post but then their edits need to be approved by someone with more reputation for those edits to be posted. If some new user doesn’t make a decent edit, the edit is rejected and never seen. If the edit is approved, the new edit is seen and the new user is credited. This is done for edits because they benefit the community. No such mechanism exists for “approving” comments because honestly, it would probably overwhelm the system to have anyone deal with piles of “Did you do this?” and “I have that same problem too!” nonsense comments. • PS: Also, note how I use the words “new user” instead of “newbie” or “n00b?” That technically doesn’t score or deduct formal rep from you, but if you want people to take you more seriously here—and in general anywhere—then you need to drop nonsense jargon terms like that as well. • Sorry for the jargon usage (this forums seem to have really strict posting rules). And regarding my initial question, since I'm a "new user" (regarding superuser, not in general) I'm getting very frustrated when I find a answer which is false or incomplete and I'm unable to comment because I'm lacking reputation. • And sorry too for the delayed answer: I've setup email notifications but unfortunately this is not working for me (I hope that feature is not of reputation level dependent too) Sep 22, 2015 at 7:23

You must log in to answer this question.
