Both [slhck](https://meta.superuser.com/questions/3515/since-when-are-software-recommendations-off-topic) and [me](https://meta.superuser.com/questions/3510/recommendations-for-the-best) were surprised to learn this. The huge number of somewhat tolerated [tag:software-rec] questions makes this approach even more questionable. In practice, it's usually fine as long as no diamond moderator happens to see your topic.
