If you have enough rep you can edit the answer and remove the dead link, that or flag it for moderator intervention to delete the answer if removing the link makes the answer "not an answer"
Votes are like a jury trial, 11 may think you are not guilty of anything, but 1 just wants to hang you. I agree, newer users see down votes as something negative, but in reality someone will come along and vote it back up. Being impatient here at SU should be avoided by everyone.
The original poster of the comment can delete it at any time, I do this all the time when the comment is no longer useful, more users should clean up their comments like I do.
