Should questions related to problems with beta software/prototype hardware be closed?
@Bob Even versions below 1.0 they provide as separate download can be considered releases. But if you're running the nightlies, or build it yourself from version control (e.g. SVN trunk), it's your own fault. We've had quite a few browser issues on MSU/MSO where it turned out the users were running Chrome Canary.

Can we add a little more to the close option Off-Topic --> Recommendation?
I wonder whether it would be used constructively. Closing as off topic because someone doesn't know our secret handshake for software recommendations is getting ridiculous. Questions that just state "I'm looking for a program to foo my bars" instead of "How can I foo my bars?" shouldn't get closed, but edited…

Why can't I see why I got a close vote?
As question author you can probably click 'close (1)' to see what reasons others voted for -- you can see the link after all.

Search for answers to questions by specific user, or vice versa
AFAIK, the best option right now is to websearch for it (e.g. site:superuser.com Karan OtherGuy keyword1 keyword2), or to use Data.SE if it's an older post (like e.g. here, use SQL wildcards in the search string, i.e. %keyword%; only one keyword allowed).

What should be featured in our list of off-topic close reasons?
Even if it's open source, if it's not released, things can still change. Maybe the software is currently broken, and won't be when released. Questions specifically on unreleased software are usually about stuff that doesn't work right. We get enough "I'm running the nightly build (e.g. Chrome Canary build) and stuff is broken, please help!" on MSU. Recommending it in answers OTOH is completely different ("The feature solving your problem is in the nightly build and will be available soon" is perfectly OK).

Why this question is closed as off-topic?
Here's our general guide on how to ask questions like this. FWIW I don't understand it either. I wouldn't have closed it, because the actual problem, or goal, of your question is pretty obvious.

Why this question is closed as off-topic?
Product recommendations are off topic, and programs are considered products. Your question can easily be reworded though (e.g. "I want to read ebooks without the page borders showing"), so you could try that.

FAQ Link Missing From Top of Page
@Karan Badges wasn't in top bar, but among "questions/tags/users" just below (and much larger). I used it to illustrate the point that different home pages are both deliberate and useful for a majority of users. Showing "about" on top when it's both among those larger links and a huge banner would simply be redundant. Removing those banners again OTOH will just cause new users to not see it at all. Regarding chat, if you're not logged in, chances are you don't have an account, hence no way to chat. SE is pretty good in logging you in automatically if you have an account in my experience.

FAQ Link Missing From Top of Page
@Karan MSO is a bad example for missing consistency, as it's a special case anyway. Comparing SU anon/me: You cannot chat when not logged in, so there's no point in showing it; about is a huge banner on the home page when not logged it as well as the new "tour" section (like "tags"); and FAQ/help is linked from the side bar when asking a question. No anonymous user cares about badges, so that was a waste of space. Anonymous users also get month (more interesting questions) instead of the regular home page. It's not inconsistent, but tailored to different audiences and information needs

Should questions dealing with admitted cases of PEBKAC be closed as Too Localized?
And the problem the question has is referred to in the following statement? "Refer to my answer below: although I stated I had my Seagate drive disconnected during the initial install, I can't be absolutely positive this was the case, as reinstalling after disconnecting it...appears to have solved the issue"

Sounds like a great candidate for too localized, so VTC. Leave a comment explaining why -- there is no question -- and if the community agrees, the question and your comment will collect close and up votes, respectively. But bear in mind that some instructions are pretty difficult to understand (stupid example: Windows users often don't realize that uppercase and lowercase letters are not the same for command line tools) and it's conceivable or even likely this person isn't the only one with this issue.

To be clear, what kind of questions are you referring to? "I tried this but it doesn't work" resolved by "Learn to read and try again", or "I tried this but it broke something" resolved by "You did it wrong, and here's how to fix your computer"?
