What's the good way to answer "What is the analog of software X for operating system Y?"
@NathanBasanese: The question was written so there is something to point people to, when they fell into the trap of writing a bad software recommendation. New users generally don't read through heaps of meta questions to prepare themselves for the site, so it's not necessary to include every piece of meta information. However, if you feel like it would be beneficial, feel free to add to the answer, it's a community wiki post :)

@NickVolynkin: That guide exists to make it clear how the "good" software recommendations should be answered. The problem with software recommendation questions was only partly the questions themselves, it was also the answers. People just answer "I use product XYZ. It's the best". These kind of answers are bad, thus, the guide. Additionally, software recommendation questions get outdated quickly. Products get replaced, renamed, get outdated, improved, abandoned, … This is why they are discouraged in general on Super User

Should I flag questions as off-topic if they are already upvoted and answered?
@TRiG They need to be deleted to avoid having the same discussions about this topic over and over again. Off-topic means that it has no place on the site.

How to handle questions closed as duplicates, when the duplicate has been closed and deleted?
That question should probably be deleted as well.

@AlexS The topic of software recommendations has been discussed to death on meta. If you want to discuss it again anyway, please open a question about it. But I would highly recommend a search for
site:meta.superuser.com software recommendation
before doing so. Sorry that I can't clear up the frustration here right now.

@AlexS I fully understand the position, but SE is about putting quality information into the right place on the web. An excellent cooking question is just not right for Super User, no matter how awesome or helpful it is. And, yes, it could be migrated to Seasoned Advice, but sometimes this is simply not an option due to the rules that exist regarding migrations and content itself. If you buy a book on car repairs, you don't want half of the book to be about hair styling - even if the hair styling information is incredibly awesome.

@JoshuaDrake: We don't migrate old questions. We also don't migrate low quality content. That question fits into both categories. If you feel strongly about preserving a list of note taking applications, post a new question on Software Recommendations.

@JoshuaDrake: Not as we see it. Software recommendation questions are not useful - at least not on Super User. Putting a garden hose into a library might be seen as "could be useful to someone", but it's probably not the right place to keep it.

Tag wiki for [php] is out of date, or Should tag wikis include "current" version numbers?
@MrStatic: The major version of certain software products can be relevant. Which is why they are included in the tag itself (as Michael pointed out). The question is about the tag wiki, which has far lower visibility.
