Can we rename "window" to "gui-window"?
@AnnonomusPerson Yes, tags can be renamed, and we can also define synonyms -- if a user e.g. insists on using the tag
excel
, it gets rewritten as microsoft-excel
. Synonyms also shows up in the tag suggestions popup, try typing e.g. pro
into the tags field on the main site and see what gets suggested. So I'd just make windows
a tag synonym of microsoft-windows
then, similar to how word
is a tag synonym of microsoft-word
, as long as my disambiguation feature request isn't implemented…

Can we rename "window" to "gui-window"?
windows-os
looks weird. microsoft-windows
perhaps, and make windows
a synonym? (How could we fix all the other important Microsoft tags and not consider Windows?!)

How do you show the left single quote in code?
If you have two unescaped backticks, they get converted into a
<code>
block. If you escape the first one, the second one doesn't get converted because there's only one left—as long as you don't add more text that also happens to contain a backtick to the same paragraph. Same with e.g. *
– a single occurrence doesn't italicize anything.

Do questions about file format internals belong here?
Questions about byte offsets of TIFF tags and dictionaries in PDF files are clearly programming questions Why? Chances are, they use some library and have no more knowledge about the actual file format than sufficiently interested users that might be working with weird niche utilities to have finegrained control over file contents.

How do I return to the main site from Meta?
@gronostaj The main site has nothing to do with help, it would only be there to mirror the main site's link. Meta OTOH is all about getting help and explanations.

"You have already flagged this post" tooltip shows up too late
@Braiam This isn't how the team sees it. If it's a discussion that should involve all the SE communities, MSO is probably the best site. But bug reports, which rarely involve the community beyond the original report? The team monitors all meta sites, and those are the ones you'd want to reach.

"You have already flagged this post" tooltip shows up too late
IIRC you used to be able to flag as one reason (e.g. poor quality) and then flag 'needs attention' afterwards. @Braiam The team monitors all meta sites. Unless you want to discuss this, no reason to post on MSO.

At what point do regexes become programming questions?
@p.campbell So you'd consider "I worked with some CUDA code and my screen went black. Is my GPU overheating?" to also be SO material?

Feature for Contesting a Duplicate Designation
@gravidThoughts For a lot of questions (probably the vast majority, unless about explicitly new/changed features), they're likely to be the same. There's no point in duplicating the same questions over and over for every new software version that comes out. One needs to identify which questions are version-specific and which aren't, of course, and take appropriate action, but just saying "I'm using a newer version, so it's not a duplicate!" (without providing some evidence that the issue in question actually has changed) doesn't cut it.

Close votes on a question that isn't off topic?
Reopened. And I wasn't the only one, three others voted before me.

Should I delete or flag to close my own question that is a duplicate?
I believe 1000 reputation is the cutoff for any automatic blocks, so that shouldn't happen to you again (unless suspended by a moderator).

Merge metro tags
@slhck It seems they've renamed it again, making the earlier question obsolete.
