Since when were command-line tools off-topic?
@Hashim, the objective is to build a knowledge base of questions that are a good fit for the site. "What tool" questions are not a good fit. As a practical matter, one can often get to that by asking how to solve a problem (an on-topic question), and that could potentially prompt an answer suggesting a tool. But that "loophole" isn't intended as a "cheat" to circumvent the guidelines and ask questions that aren't a good fit. The idea is not to jump through silly hoops to slip in poor-fit questions by using a loophole when you know that the only solution is a product recommendation.

Can/should we do anything about old "unanswered" questions being bumped when they have an answer?
Questions can get bumped if they have no accepted or upvoted answer. I added context to the answer from the author's original comment and upvoted the answer. It still isn't really worthy of an upvote, but it was posted as an answer based on the promise of acceptance and the OP's report that it solved the problem; a small price to stop the bumping, and the thread can now get buried and stay there. :-)

Wrongly downvoted answer
@John, I'm just a passerby; haven't even looked at the referenced post. Just wanted to make an observation. You refer to downvotes indicating that an answer is wrong, which is a bad assumption. If you hover on the answer downvote button, it offers guidance on what it is appropriate for: "This answer is not useful". Being wrong is one possibility, but an answer can be viewed as not useful for many other reasons. More often than not, answers are downvoted because they are viewed as simply not adding value for one reason or another. The explanations here suggest that.

In general, changes of that scope are either too much change from the author's words, or too much change for reviewers to validate with confidence. Hopefully, your answer gives the OP what they need.

The question is very long, and a lot of the bulk looks like nonessential information. The biggest improvement would come from slimming it down to just what's needed to understand the issue. I'm not sure to what extent your proposed edit makes it materially better, although it was a valiant effort. It might be better organized, but it's still too much for readers to wade through. If all of that is needed to explain the problem, the question probably isn't a good fit for this platform. (cont'd)

Automatic change of formatting while we answer
I'm just guessing from your description, but it sounds like you're putting in paragraph breaks and the result is being displayed as a single large block. That happens if you use a single "Enter" as a paragraph break. You need two Enters. Also, in certain cases, like quoted text, finishing a sentence and following it immediately with an Enter won't be recognized as a new paragraph for text wrapping purposes. Adding two spaces before the Enter solves most of those.
