I asked a question on Super User about "a website to compare software/hardware/electronics"; I was told that questions about web apps are not appropriate for SU. I understand how questions on Facebook can be banned, but I feel that this question is somewhat in a gray zone: I am only looking for a recommendation for software for a specific task. If the question was about desktop software, I guess it would be perfectly valid one.

I see that none of the websites mentioned in the StackExchange sites list cover this (small) piece of "no man's land". Could you suggest a place to ask this question? Could you also point me to an explanation why all web apps are treated so distinctively?

You should ask any questions about web applications on the Web Applications Stack Exchange site.

Web Applications - Stack Exchange is for expert and advanced users of web applications.

If your question generally covers...

  • Using Gmail, Facebook, Twitter, Google, or any other website which behaves like an application
  • Bookmarklets
  • Browsers and their features relating to the use of a web application (Greasemonkey scripts for a web application, etc.)
  • Good thing we have a site for that now :P although I think this question was done long before it Commented Sep 7, 2011 at 8:51

Requests for recommendations are explicitly disallowed at Web Apps. help/on-topic: "Please note that the following subjects are considered off-topic here: ... Web application recommendation requests" Commented Jul 8, 2015 at 17:19

Web Apps no longer accepts requests for Web App recommendations. As Fish Below the Ice mentions, the Help Center On Topic page says:

Please note that the following subjects are considered off-topic here:

  • Web browsers, including features and browser extensions/add-ons
  • Creating or developing web applications
  • Desktop software
  • Applications for mobile devices such as the Android or iPad
  • Hosted scripts such as Wordpress.org and phpBB
  • Web applications containing adult content
  • Web application recommendation requests

(emphasis mine)

Depending on what you're looking for, Software Recommendations (currently in public beta) might be the right spot, but their requirements for questions is fairly stringent. (See their Help Center.)
